Longest married couple in the U.S. has been together for over 80 years!
These days we're more likely to read about some trashy celebrity's 72-day marriage (you know who I'm talking about) than about everlasting love. Well, no more of that! Today we're going to celebrate a couple living in Fairfield, Connecticut, who have been married for a whopping 80 years. That's right, they have been married for longer than many people live and are now being honored as the winners of the 2013 Longest Married Couple Project from Christian organization Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

According to UPI.com, the project was based on nominations and John and Ann Betar of Fairfield have been deemed to have the longest marriage of any of the couples nominated by their friends and family. Honestly, I am not at all surprised. Eighty years is a REALLY long time to live, much less be tied to one loving person, but that's what this beautiful couple has done.
Their tale hasn't been all fun and games, though, since apparently they first married on November 25, 1932, in order to prevent Ann "from having to marry a different man chosen by her father." Talk about true love! Husband John says that "some people said it would never last. We showed them."

That's the sweetest thing I've ever heard! I mean, the drama of a marriage that shouldn't have happened, two men fighting for the hand of the same woman, a father's disapproval, a secret wedding at a time when that was REALLY not cool ... and all that drama only led to their happily ever after! And, wow, 80 years of happiness! That's truly sweet. I wish this lovely couple all the best and, hopefully, many more loving years together.
