Watching telenovelas can be bad for your love life!
Ever since I can remember, my abuela has been a religious watcher of various telenovelas. Not that I can blame her--they're super addicting! That's probably why I'm a big fan of several overly dramatic TV shows myself (Revenge, anyone?), almost all of which feature bizarre and juicy love triangles as part of their plotlines. But while these shows might be entertaining, it turns out watching them can actually be bad for my own love life!
How? Researchers surveyed about 329 married individuals about their relationship satisfaction and expectation and their belief in fictional romantic relationships as seen in a range of shows and movies. They found that the more people believe in the unrealistic portrayals of love on screen, the harder it will be to commit to a relationship in their personal lives.
Hmm… Well, I have been known to be a slight commitment-phobe in the past, but I don't think it's because I'm waiting for a real-life version of Ryan Gosling in The Notebook to come along….At least, not entirely. Just kidding! Kinda.

But in all seriousness, I don't really buy this whole theory. First of all, I'm pretty sure most sane adult women--at least all of the ones I've met on my 23 years on this planet--are fully capable of distinguishing between a TV romance and a non-fictional one.
And secondly, even if a female does like to daydream about meeting her Prince Charming Cinderella-style, then what's wrong with that? I mean, isn't that what TV is for? As long as she doesn't get too wrapped up in her imagination that it prevents her from meeting new people or trying out relationships, then I think it's perfectly okay. Hey, a girl's got a right to indulge in her own fantasies.
