Why we should know if presidential candidates believe in "open marriage"

Um, so what is up with all this talk about open marriages? I was confused when they seemed to first come into vogue about five years ago, and now there seems to be a renewed interest thanks to GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, whether or not he approves.

The story goes a little something like this, Gingrich--a confirmed mujeriego--has an ex-wife who recently gave an interview to ABC's Nightline in which she said that Gingrich lacks the moral fiber to be president. Marianne Gingrich also claims that Newt asked her for an "open marriage" so that he could carry on an affair with his current wife, Calista. Blatant hypocrisy aside (this the same man who used to go on and on about so-called family values), we have to give it to Gingrich for having the chutzpah to actually request such an arrangement from his wife. If she were Latina, it would have gone something like this...

"¿Qué, qué? ¡Hijo de la gran #$&^*!" Get the hell out of here! I never want to see your face again..." before some heavy, blunt object was thrown in his direction.

Well, at least that is how I imagine it, because seriously, what the heck is an "open marriage"? Why get married if you want an open relationship? That's like saying, "I want to be a little bit pregnant." Um, nope, sorry. It's sort of an all or nothing situation here.

The WHOLE POINT of getting married is to make a life long commitment to someone you love. You promise that you will always be there for each other and make each other the number one priority in your lives. It's supposed to be the foundation that family is built on. How strong can you expect a family to be if it's built on such a shaky foundation? I mean, if you want an open marriage, just keep dating and don't get married.

So to Newt's outrage over being questioned about his ex-wife's claims, I say: This is important news. We should know if the people running our country have bailed out on previous commitments and YES! I want a good man (or woman) running this country. Not one who felt it was OK to leave his wife when she was sick or one who thought he could get away from another divorce scandal by requesting an open marriage.

If it was the other way around, Gingrich would be using every opportunity he had to blast his opponents on their lack of family values and don't even get me started on the how the news cycle would look if anything like this ever came about the Obama's marriage.

Do you think it's important to know about politician's marriage histories? Does this revelation by Newt Gingrich's ex-wife change your opinion of him?
