Toddler missing during family picnic found dead in lake & it can happen to any of us
A family outing turned into every parent's worst nightmare when 2-year-old Ruhshona Kurbonova drowned in Prospect Park lake in Brooklyn Saturday after wandering off with a 4-year-old relative. The saddest part of this story though? It's something that can happen to any of us ...

Witnesses spoke of hearing her mother wailing after NYPD divers pulled the girl's body from the water five hours after she had been reported missing. Ruhshona had walked off with the 4-year-old boy who was found soon after covered in algae. When asked where the girl was, he pointed at the water, according to news reports. Police were called to help the family and several park-goers in their search for the girl. I can't imagine what the next several hours of searching were like for little Ruhshona's 37-year-old mother and her family.
Accidental drowning happens so quickly. In this case, a relative reported that one minute the kids were there and the next they weren't. Every day, two children die from unintentional drowning in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It can happen in minutes in a bathtub, at a pool, the ocean or a lake.
As a mother, it's hard not to think of all of the times that we've been out with groups of friends and how easy it could have been for one of the kids to wander off. It's horrible to think about what Ruhshona's family is going through. One minute they're enjoying a family picnic and the next, their lives are shattered. This could have happened to anyone.
Accidental drowning can be prevented. The CDC recommends supervising children at all times when in or around water and learning CPR. It's early in the summer. Let's hope that this doesn't happen again.
