Mom whose son died of mystery illness could now face murder charges

A mom who gained online support after blogging about her sick son could face charges after authorities discovered that the boy actually died from a poisoned feeding tube, not an illness.

Lacey Spears had recorded the health problems her son struggled with for years before 5-year-old Garnett Spears died last January, only days after being hospitalized in New York. But doctors soon discovered a lethal dose of sodium in the child's body and alerted the authorities. Now, Spears could be going to jail.

After examination, the coroner ruled the boy's death a homicide. Adding suspicion to the matter? According to Fox News, shortly after Garrett was hospitalized, his mom called a neighbor and asked her to destroy any evidence of feeding tubes in the home. The neighbor apparently never granted her request and police seized the tubes from her house.

Reports say charges could range from murder to manslaughter to reckless manslaughter to criminal negligent homicide. Investigators are now reportedly looking at the possibility that Spears suffers from Munchausen by proxy, a psychiatric disorder and rare form of child abuse in which a parent or caregiver harms a child to seek the attention and sympathy of others.

Spears, for her part, denies any wrongdoing and maintains she is simply grieving the loss of her son. She has since relocated to Kentucky.

This is an awful, awful story. A 5-year-old boy has been killed and his own mother could be the one at fault? It's unfathomable that any parent would be capable of doing something so horrible to their own innocent child. I only hope that the police uncover the truth about what happened and holds whoever is responsible to the fullest extent of the law.
