SEE the shocking VIDEO of police officer violently hitting woman who says she's pregnant

Cop punches pregnant womanOh man, this is a story that bothers me on so many levels I don't even know where to start, but I gotta start somewhere. A video of a Rochester, New York police officer arresting a woman who claims to be pregnant has gone viral. The officer is Lucas Krull and the woman he is arresting is 21-year-old Brenda Hartaway. The whole time she is agitated and yelling that she is pregnant. Over and over again she yells that she is pregnant. Now, I haven't seen a pregnancy test for her, but in that situation I would take her at her word it. I'm thinking better safe than sorry. She is, however, resisting arrest the entire time, she is not going to go peacefully. To subdue her, Officer Lucas Krull hits her on the head and knocks her down in a way that makes her land on her stomach.

I'm not a cop and I certainly have no expertise on how to handle someone who is resisting arrest, much less someone who is pregnant and resisting arrest. But it's upsetting to see anyone hit a pregnant woman or to see a pregnant woman fall to the ground.

Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard has seen the video and he said in a news conference:

I think if you watch the video, what you do see is that all the officers involved used tremendous restraint during the course of this event. They were aware of the fact that there was video being produced, and I think since the last two years, we've been very aware that that's the potential for anything that we're involved in.

That comment bothers me because officers should show restraint whether they know they are being video-taped or not. The statement just leaves me feeling uneasy.

WUSA 9 reports that Krull's actions are being investigated, but he hasn't been taken off duty. They also report that Sheppard says that officers are not taught to subdue pregnant women any differently and that the woman should have protected her own well-being by acting cooperatively.

I agree that it's not a good idea to resist arrest and that you will suffer consequences if you don't listen to an arresting officer. I don't know what it's like to be arrested, but I do know what it's like to be pregnant and I'm telling you sometimes those hormones kick in and make it very hard to be cooperative. Perhaps officers do need to be taught a different way to subdue women if they claim to be pregnant. I'm not saying let them go, but maybe don't hit them on the head and knock them down on their stomach.
