Breaking News: Deadly explosion in Louisiana leaves 30 people injured
The Williams Geismar Olefins chemical plant in Geismar, Louisiana exploded and caught fire this morning prompting evacuations in the area. Residents had been told to stay indoors as firefighters put out the flames caused by the massive explosion. So far no fatalities have been reported but over 30 people have been injured and rushed to hospitals.
At least six burn victims were airlifted to hospitals while others were transported in ambulances. For the safety of the rest of the town, police have also shut down Louisiana highways in the area.

Lousiana's WWLTV news station reports that although the fire has been contained, a threat of a second fire still remained. The plant had over 600 employees working at the time of the fire, but they are still trying to account who the victims are and the extent of their injuries. The plant is known to manufacture 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene an ingredient used to make plastics and 90 million pounds of polymer grade propylene.
According to WAFB, The American Red Cross has responded to the incident as well and has been seen providing food and water to those affected by the explosion. The Ascension Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has also set up a center for uninjured workers to reunite with their families. The plant shares the area with other plants alongside the Mississippi River and scares many because it is known for its flammable gasses.
Although residents fear of a second explosion, the company said in a press release that the emergency responders know what they are doing and have been working diligently to keep the people of the town safe. Further news has yet to be released as the Louisiana town sits tight and hopes for the best.
This news is scary since this wouldn't be the first time a chemical plant has caused a lot of devastation. Let's hope this is the end of what could have been one of the scariest incidents our nation has seen. My thoughts go out to the victims' families and I pray that there aren't any grave injuries or fatalities. The last thing our country needs right now is another heartbreaking tragedy.
