Olympian Oscar Pistorius accused of killing girlfriend in Valentine's Day surprise gone horribly wrong

I was absolutely devastated to hear about what appears to be the most tragic Valentine's Day story ever. South African Olympic sprinter and paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius has been arrested and charged with murder after his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was found shot to death at his home in Pretoria, South Africa. Police found Reeva shot in the head and on the arm and Pistorius's 9 mm pistol was also found at the scene with no other suspects being involved in the case as of now.

Pistorius and Steenkamp had been dating for a few months already and seemed happy. Steenkamp had told the social pages of last weekend's Sunday Independent that when it came to gifts, Pistorious had, "impeccable" taste. "His gifts are always thoughtful," the 29-year-old woman was quoted saying. She even posted on Twitter a few hours before her death a post asking her followers how they were planning on celebrating Valentine's Day. "What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??" she tweeted.

So what went wrong? While it hasn't been confirmed by police, Johannesburg's Talk Radio 702 speculates that Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for a burglar. It appears that she was trying to surprise him for Valentine's Day by intruding into his house and Pistorius may have thought it was someone trying to break in. (It's actually very common for home owners to own a gun in South Africa in case they need to defend themselves against burglars.) The Olympic racer, also known as "Blade Runner" because he raced with prosthetics on both legs, has been pretty open to the media about owning a gun.

Whatever the case may be, there is no doubt this is still a very devastating story. Tragic for Steenkamp's family and especially tragic for Pistorius if he really did shoot his girlfriend by accident. I can't think of a worst thing to happen on Valentine's Day, especially since if reports are true, she was just trying to surprise him. My condolences go to the victim's family!
