6-year-old Latina girl among victims of Connecticut elementary school massacre
The mayor of the Puerto Rican town of Maunabo, has confirmed to that country's newspaper El Nuevo Día, that his great niece was among the 20 child victims of Friday's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Jorge Marquez told the daily that Ana Grace Marquez, his sister's granddaughter, was about to turn 7 years old. He also told another newspaper, Primera Hora, that Ana Grace's brother also attends the elementary school, but that he was in another classroom when the shootings took place.
Marquez said he was with his sister who was visibly affected by the worst news a grandmother can possibly get. The family plans to travel from Puerto Rico to Connecticut today, as reported by El Nuevo Día.
Marquez also told the newspaper that:
This is something so terrible. Our family is very close and we've been waiting for news all day today. We were hoping she was just injured, but her parents just called us about the news. There is no going back.
Ana Grace was one of the 27 deaths believed to have been perpetrated by 20-year-old Adam Lanza, including that of his own mother whom he killed at home before going on the killing rampage at the school where she worked. Police still have no motive for the massacre--the worst ever at an elementary school in the nation.
I can't even begin to imagine what the parents of Ana Grace--and those of the 19 other little kids who lost their lives so suddenly and tragically yesterday must be going through right now. I've no idea how they'll find the strength to keep on going because I can imagine few things more terrible than living with the knowledge that your little one's last minutes on earth were probably filled with the most indescribable terror they had ever felt.
