Aurora, Colorado shooting spree at 'Dark Knight Rises' midnight screening leaves 12 dead

Horrifying news this morning—an armed gunman tossed tear gas and opened fire into an Aurora, Colorado movie theater last night during the midnight screening of the latest Batman movie. The attack killed at least 12 and injured 38 others, including a victim as young as 3 months old.

Authorities say that the shooter appeared in the front of the theater and threw a smoke bomb into the crowd before spraying the audience with gunfire. Police arrested the alleged shooter, 24-year-old man James Holmes, in the parking lot. They took a rifle and handgun from the suspect and found another gun in the theater.

President Barack Obama released a statement from he and First Lady Michelle Obama stating they were "shocked and saddened" by the shooting and would do anything possible to support the victims. He is expected to hold a press conference about the incident later this morning.

I am heartbroken and in complete disbelief over this terrible massacre. What kind of sick and twisted person would commit such an act for no apparent reason, other than to hurt total strangers? And it's even harder to process when you think about how there were young kids and babies that were only a few months old in that theater! I can't even imagine how terrifying it must have been to experience that, especially considering that Aurora is only about 13 miles away from Littleton, the site of the Columbine High School shooting in 1999.

I am just glad that the police were at least able to catch the suspect and I pray that the injured, the families of the victims, and the rest of the community are able to get the support and help that they need to recover. My thoughts are with all of them.
