What happened to young Latino journalist Armando Montano? (VIDEO)

Besides having healthy children, every mom I know dreams with their kids doing good in school, going to college and eventually being successful in their chosen field. I know my mom did and I know that's what I'd like for my own kids. So I was heartbroken when I heard that Armando Montano, a young Latino journalist with an incredibly promising career ahead of him, was found dead in an elevator shaft near the apartment he lived in while a news intern for The Associated Press in Mexico City.

Details of the incident are scarce as Mexican authorities are still investigating his death. Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy said it's monitoring the investigation.

Montano was only 22 years old and he had just graduated from Grinell College with a bachelor's in Spanish and a concentration in Latin American studies. He arrived in Mexico City at the beginning of June to begin an internship with the AP and had already covered several stories there, including the recent shooting of three federal policemen in the Mexican capital's airport. He had plans to obtain a master's degree in journalism at the University of Barcelona in the fall.

Montano's long list of accomplishments speaks of a young journalist who was not only passionate, but also committed to his profession. His former editors at publications where he interned, including The New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education, had nothing but praise for him.

I can't even begin to imagine what his parents--both professors at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, where Montano grew up--must be going through. I mean, to be so incredibly proud to have a talented and driven young man for a son, and then out of the blue to be told that he has been found dead in a city far away from you. Now, I can't help but wonder how a parent is supposed to get over the death of a child.
