In 2010, Eric Balderas was a college student at Harvard when he tried to use a university ID card to board a plane from San Antonio to Boston and was detained by immigration authorities at a Texas airport. Balderas thought he would be deported but was granted deferred action, which can be used to halt deportation based on the merits of a case. His case sparked buzz around the world, particularly because at the time, Balderas was studying molecular and cellular biology in order to become a cancer researcher.
