High school valedictorian Daniela Pelaez wasn't asking for much. The brilliant young Miami high school student just wanted to stay in the U.S. and continue her studies, but after an immigration judge denied her residency bid and issued an order of voluntary deportation, it looked like the teen might be sent back to Colombia--a country she hadn't called home since she was 4 years old. 2,600 of her fellow North Miami Beach High students marched in a show of support of the senior and eventually Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) stepped in and helped delay the proceedings. She went on to work with politicans on the Studying Towards Adjusted Residency Status Act and started the We Are Here Foundation. She was accepted to Dartmouth College. Her career goal is to attend medical school and become a heart surgeon.
