Stopping the deportation of our young children was the right thing for President Obama to do

WOW! I really have to say it's been a while since a politician has done something--anything--that has made me really proud to be an American. I can now safely say that President Obama just did.

In a shocking move, the White House has declared that they would stop deporting undocumented children using prosecutorial discretion. Basically, he just isn't going to enforce the immigration law when it comes to these kids if they meet certain critieria. Doing so, he essentially worked around Congress, who have been determined to block every attempt at passing the DREAM Act and paths to citizenship for these kids.

To qualify for immunity from deportation under the new policy, undocumented residents must be under the age of thirty and:

  • Have been brought to the United States before they turned 16
  • Have been in the country for at least five continuous years
  • Have no criminal history
  • Have graduated from a U.S. high school, earned a GED, or served in the military

They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed. They are not becoming citizens but they will no longer be criminals either.

Sound familiar? That's because this is essentially the DREAM act that immigration activist have been pushing so hard for years. I'm shocked that President Obama decided to act so decisively on such a politically charged issue, but most of all I'm proud. I mean, there is really no logical way to argue that children deserve to pay for the mistakes made by their parents. Not to mention the fact that so many of our nation's brightest and best are suffering from the inability to attend college and follow their dreams because of their immigration status.

This was a smart move by President Obama not just because it will most certainly galvanize the Latino vote around our current Commander-in-Chief but because, quite frankly, it was the right thing to do.

Now all he needs to do is find a way around all these pesky Republicans to provide a path to citizenship for all of these young Latinos citizens, because whether or not folks want to agree--we ARE the future of the United States of America.

What do you think about Obama making our DREAM come true?

I'm glad the kids are going to be allowed to stay in the country. Most of them are brought her at such a young age and go to American Schools and earn their keep just like everyone else. So why should they have to leave...way to do something semi productive Obama.

Love your perspective on this issue! I believe that it is not the end-all solution.  BUT, for all those hypocritical"Americans" this is a strong message.  The only natives here were the Native Americans (many of which were Mexican) and the rest of us came from somewhere else! It is time to remind Americans that this country has a "statute of liberty" that "embraces" everyone!  How about we begin with this one step to embrace our immigrant past, present and future!

You said it, he worked around Congress and refused to enforce existing laws - in other words, he acted in violation of his Oath to uphold the laws of these United states, and you are proud of him for that. Of course you are. Just to think, the pesky people that demand that laws be abided by, how absurd! Now if only these "pesky" laws didn't get in your way, you could walk into a bank and make yourself rich! Well, maybe the next executive order will target Latinas that rob banks, just to make their children's lives better!
