Newlywed horrifically murdered in her bridal gown

In tragic news, a 26-year-old Latina mom, Estrella Carrera, was found stabbed to death in her bathtub. But the even more heartbreaking part? She was a new bride and was still wearing her wedding dress when authorities found her in her Illinois apartment.

Carrera, who has a 9-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son, was married on Friday night to the father of her youngest child, whom a cousin says she had been dating on-and-off for around three years. The event took family members by surprise because Carrerra apparently gave them hardly any notice.

"This just happened out of nowhere," Carrera's cousin Jaime Lopez told the Tribune of the wedding. "It was so fast I couldn't even make it to the celebration."

Carrera reportedly dropped her kids off with her father after the wedding Friday night. When she didn't return to pick them up, her family began to worry. After failing to find her at her apartment, they called the police who were conducting a well-being check in the apartment when they found her. They have ruled her death a homicide and believe it was the result of a domestic-related incident.

Authorities are not releasing the name of Carrera's new husband because the death is still being investigated. However, some of the family members expressed disapproval of their relationship. "He's just a person who had problems," another of Carrera's cousins, Sandy Lopez, said.

The incident is tear-jerking and terrifying for more reasons than one, but especially because domestic violence has only been on the rise in recent years and is a particularly bad problem for Latinas. And although the police is still investigating and has not officially charged anyone for the horrid crime, I can't help but think there has to be some reason why Carrera's family was wary of her new husband. If there's one thing I've learned having a loud, crazy, sometimes annoyingly overprotective Latin family, it's that they're right a lot of the time, especially when it comes to judging someone's character.

In any case, my thoughts and prayers are with Carrera's family and children. I hope the police is able to find answers to all of their unanswered questions soon.
