President Obama (finally!) comes out in support of marriage equality

FINALLY! Those are the first words that escaped my mouth when I read that President Barack Obama has endorsed marriage equality. After he stayed silent earlier in the week when Vice President Joe Biden said that he is "completely comfortable" with same sex marriage, the President of the U.S. has come out in support of same sex couples and their right to marry. The news comes right on the devastating heels of North Carolina's recent vote in favor of banning gay marriage.

But with the President now firmly on board, I think we can say that this week has been one step backwards and two steps forward same sex mariage with the most powerful man in the world's support!

I don't think I could possibly be happier about this news. I have many gay friends but I also have a gay uncle. Now maybe I'll actually be able to see him get married to his boyfriend and raise the family he's always wanted. It's a big win for the LGBTQIA community and for anyone whose family is a little bit different. I know I'm biased but I fully support the President in his new thinking. This is what he told ABC News' Robin Roberts this afternoon:

I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.

Although it took him almost his full term to conclude his previous "evolving" views on the issue of marriage equality, I was so touched by his speech and how he sees equality in America's youth. He even mentions how his adorable daughters, Malia and Sasha, have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. It's exactly his daughters thinking that all of this doesn't make sense that has changed his perspective, all for the better.

Despite the marriage equality set back in North Carolina today, I can't wait to see what further steps President Obama towards ensuring that a family can actually be together. No matter if it's a traditional mom and dad, a single parent, two moms or two dads--a family is a family and I'm so happy that the President finally sees that.
