AZ Sheriff Paul Babeu caught in scandalous gay affair with illegal immigrant
Sometimes, the truth is just better than fiction and many times, things happen in reality that are just so deliciously ironic it would be hard to make it up.
Take the case of Paul Babeu. Here's a super macho Arizona sheriff who's basically made his entire career drumming up anti-immigrant fervor. I mean, the guys announcement that he was running for congress was titled, "It's Time For a New Sheriff In Washington," and in it he decried the "400,000 illegal crossings into our state every year." So yeah, he's made his position relatively clear on the issue.
But wait, turns out that Babeu is actually gay--which isn't really a big deal. But you know what is? The fact that his longtime lover Jose, is an undocumented immigrant. Oh, and Babeu also happens to be the co-chair of Mitt Romney's presidential campaign in Arizona!
The Pinal County Sheriff has already resigned from Mitt's campaign amid allegations of misconduct, but he still intends on running as the GOP candidate for congress in his rural district. Reportedly, his lover Jose hired an attorney after he broke up with Babeu. The top cop wasn't really happy about being dumped and Jose is claiming that Babeu threatened to deport him.
But wait, it gets better. Turns out Jose had been with Babeu since around 2006, and he broke up with the sheriff because he totally caught him trying to cheat! You see, even though he was in a long-term committed relationship, Jose found out that Babeu was still trolling around websites looking for lovers. So he created a fake profile, started an adulterous affair with Babeu online, and lured him into a face-to-face meeting where he dumped him for being a lying, cheating, scumbag. Seriously, it's like a telenovela, right?
Arizona-based immigration attorney Nancy-Jo Merritt summed it up perfectly:
If what [Babeu's attorney] says is correct [about Jose's being illegal], either the sheriff had a long relationship with someone he knew was undocumented, while all the time being Mr. Bluster about the border and using it for political gain, or he threatened to deport someone he just broke up with. That's just the worst kind of hypocrisy.
You hit the nail on the head Nancy-Jo!
What do you think about Paul Babeu's situation? Do you think he should still be running for congress?
