Ellen DeGeneres takes on JCPenney controversy with class
There’s something to be said for a woman who handles a big issue with panache. Retailer JCPenney recently named talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres as their new spokeswoman. Everything was going fine until a group called One Million Moms accused the company of “jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon.”
But instead of getting (understandably) angry, Ellen took the high road and responded to the grou--not in the same hateful words--but with the dignity and class. Not that we're surprised at all, this a woman who has built her entire brand on embracing the differences in people and being a loving human being.

Addressing the group’s concerns on her TV show on Wednesday, Ellen replied:
“I'm happy about (being the spokesperson), JCPenney is happy about it. But there's this group called One Million Moms that is not happy about it. And normally I try not to pay attention to my haters, but this time I'd like to talk about it because my haters are my motivators. This organization doesn't think I should be the spokesperson because I am gay. So for those of you tuning in for the first time, I'm gay. I hope you were sitting down. ... So they wanted to get me fired, and I'm proud and happy to say that JCPenney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson.”
Handling the situation with a little humor--and a lot of class--Ellen proved once more that she’s not only the right lady for the job but also an excellent role model. Standing by her, JCPenney’s chief executive officer Ron Johnson said that the company was founded on The Golden Rule and they are happy that Ellen shares their same values of “treating people fair and square, just like you would like to be treated yourself.”

She may not be Latina, but this is one woman I want my kids to look up to--mainly because she’s a good person who stands up for herself in a really classy way.
