How to survive a Facebook addiction

I've had a Facebook account practically since its inception. I was graduating high school when the social media site launched in 2004 and my college was one of the first to get it, so I signed up right away. It was a great way to make friends early on and I've been pretty much addicted ever since.

We all joke about Facebook addiction, don't we? Well, a new study by the University of Chicago reports that Facebook addiction is very real. As in: Facebook is more addictive than cigarettes which honestly worries me a bit.

Although I could never officially quit Facebook, I decided that a "social media-free weekend" was a good first step to take.

I picked a random weekend and committed to turning off all of my electronics for the entire time. It started, officially, after work on a Friday and didn't end until Sunday night. My plan was to stay off all of my social media sites, but Facebook in particular, for the entire time.

It was really difficult at first. I'm used to spending some time on the weekends catching up with friends and family on Facebook. I enjoy browsing through photos, reading updates and wishing people "happy birthday" online. I read once that the first thing many people do when they wake up is check their Facebook page and email. I was definitely one of those people and it felt weird to not be able to do that.

But you know what? I survived. No tragedies happened during my Facebook break and I was able to catch up when I came back. Instead of spending countless weekend hours flipping through virtual photo albums, I was able to get a lot of stuff done around the house. Next time I'm feeling like I'm spending too much time on Facebook, I'm going to take a couple hours and distract myself with something else—like connecting with my family in person instead of online. After all, if the first step is admitting you have a problem, the next step is actually doing something about it.
